I had no idea how much my Belkin Wireless router was ruining my life until I finally upgraded. I always assumed my sketchy internet performance was because of my cable company (Charter). Turns out, my cable-based internet is pretty good and my crappy choice of wireless router was among the worst tech decisions I've ever made.

Last week I had no wifi and very limited (slow) wired internet access. While troubleshooting I finally just bypassed the router altogether and plugged right into the modem...worked great. Did a search for Belkin wireless router problems and discovered that this crappy thing had plagued thousands of people. I went to wally world and dropped a c-note on a better quality Cisco router. It's like the sun has come out for the first time in three years.

I know I sound like a tech noob and you guys have figured this stuff out ten years ago, but I can hardly contain my joy for having decent performance. F^@k.

The most reliable wireless router I have used to date has been the AirPort Extreme.

And I've used quite a handful from crappy Hawking stuff to enterprise Cisco equipment. The AirPort Extremes have been rock solid reliable wherever I put them, whether in an office with dozens of devices behind them, or a home with only a few. Hell, the one in my house only gets rebooted when a firmware upgrade is applied. I can measure uptime in months if not years!

The ONLY downside I see is the limited customization options if you are on the newer firmware. For most everyone, this is not a problem.

Anyhow, hopefully your new Linksys unit serves you well. Just FYI Linksys was just sold to Belkin - I am not hopeful for their future.

Sounds like it was really affecting your porn viewing.

I was just going to post that my airport extreme might be doing the same thing to me as tball's old router. It's a couple of years old. It has a desktop computer and a blu-ray player hardwired to it and 2 iPhones and 2 iPads connected to it at most at any time. The hard wired devices run pretty well, but the wireless (ironically all Apple products) are hit or miss. I haven't tried another router, but I think it's the router because only the wireless devices have slow internet.

1w00d, no, I actually have an Airport Express behind it as a range extender. Works great.

ohsix, when was the last time you updated the firmware? Apple pretty routinely puts out updates. I'd give that a go before you go too nuts.

chavez, a couple of weeks ago when I couldn't connect to my wireless network on my iPad. After updating the router I was able to connect, but it was still slow that night.

I've never been a fan of Linksys routers, even though I work for the company that sold them to Belkin. I've had a 2-Wire router (which is now owned by Pace) for the past few years that works a hell of a lot better than any of my Linksys routers.

I've gone through belkin, netgear, and linksys and finally ditched them all and bought the apple airport extreme dual band router. BEST buy ever. I have NOT ONCE had to reset my router to maintain wireless, not once. This was a weekly occurrence with the other brands I've owned. hands down best router available

Probably asking for trouble by saying it aloud, but I've had few problems with my Belkin N. Occasional restart required (every 4-6 months or so) and I have no issues with it at all from a performance standpoint.

The only issue I have is when I watch NFL Sunday Ticket app or the DirecTV app on my iPad2. It will sometimes drop the Wi-Fi and go straight to 3G. I haven't been able to figure out why despite several Google searches to research it. When it happens, I can pretty much just go re-connect to the Wi-Fi and it doesn't happen again. Strange.

If anyone has a suggestion on that I'd be forever indebted.

Any other [cheaper] reliable router suggestions?

My Linksys WRT160N is showing its age. Having to reset every couple of days due to DNS issues.

Range is decent, but seems to be susceptible to outside interference (I live in an apartment complex), and the wireless connection to my PS3 is abysmal (usually in the 7Mbps/3Mbps range). I don't really do any online gaming, but even Netflix is sluggish at those speeds.

Don't need much, so I'm hesitant to spend $180 on an airPort. I have a surfboard modem in a small apartment. Roughly 25Mbps/10Mbps wired speeds. Couple blu ray players, couple laptops, couple phones. Just want something I don't have to worry about.

JV, I've had decent results with D-Link and Netgear. You also could possibly replace your Moto Surfboard with an all-in-one unit like this: http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-SURFboard-Gateway-SBG6580-Wireless/dp/B0040IUI46/ref=pd_sxp_f_pt

You'd have to check with your cable provider to see if it's compatible, but if it is it's a nice way to minimize the crap and possibly eliminate the modem "lease" if you are being charged one.

pet575, this is really a YMMV area. There are going to be complaints about every single brand.
