Well, I guess the countdown starts to the first woman POW horror story.

Thoughts?

More power to them. No problems with it at all.

As always, it's not going to be the women that are going to pose a potential problem, it's going to be the men's reaction to them.

Will they take orders from a woman under fire?

Will they forego training and tactics to "protect" a female soldier more than they would another male, especially when wounded?

etc., etc.

I have no problem with anyone who willfully puts themselves in harm's way in service of our country.

I actually didn't know that they weren't allowed until we heard on the news that they are now. It kind of came as a shock to me. So yeah, I don't see any problems with it at all.

If they ever instituted a draft, could/should they draft women now? Or only men, and if not, why not? From a legal perspective...

I love a woman that can handle a weapon. Mr. Green

I'm all for it and think if they want to be in combat, they should. I'm sure there will be some issues like JV brought up for a while, but those will get weeded out with time and discipline I would think.

I don't see any problem with this, but only if they make men's and women's PT requirements the same. My understanding is that they have two different standards/minimum requirements for men and women.

I'd be damned if I'd be okay going into combat with a woman (or any other person) who wasn't held to the same physical requirements as I was.

Several women have already been held as POWs. The "countdown" started a long time ago.

To quote the Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman General Martin Depsey:

"If members of our military can meet the qualifications for a job -- and let me be clear, I'm not talking about reducing the qualifications for the job -- if they can meet the qualifications for the job, then they should have the right to serve, regardless of creed or color or gender or sexual orientation," he said."

So, when are you headed off to combat, tough guy?

This is really not that big of a deal, folks. For all intents and purposes, women have been serving in combat for years now. Decades, even. I see this as more of a formal acknowledgement than anything else.

During the time that I served, this was absolutely the case.

Pfft, as if there are really front lines anymore. We hit with drone strikes and supervise villages. This is all puffy legislation.

Exactly my thoughts... The Israelis are pretty versed in this arena and it works for them.

I dont see any problem with it. The physical tests wouldnt scare me as much as lets say an emotional test. Ever see a pissed off girlfriend? How would their emotions hold up in similar situations. Then again on the counterside to that maybe men soldiers have become so isolated from their emotions they can make poor decisions for example by firing on innocent people.
As a whole though the larger our armed forces are the stronger they will be.

They want combat pay for being in combat zones, as well as the clasification for being in combat. It opens up more promotion opportunities. To me, if you are somewhere that is being fired on, you are in a combat position. As far as special forces go, GI Jane was a cool movie. Go for it.
