I'll be buying a car for commuting in rain and over the winter when I can't ride my motorbike.

I am considering the fiat Abarth. Drove the 500, and it was pretty underwhelming as far as the engine goes, but the style is nice and I liked it.

any other suggestions for a gas efficient, but not ass-ugly or boring commuter?

Going to test a chevy spark and dodge dart. I want to keep it under 22K, and if possible, under 20K.

We had a Mazda Protege5 that we really liked...they now have the Mazda 3 hatchback that has a similar look and feel. The Dodge Dart has a cool look to it, I think. You could go Civic Si coupe. The Scion coupe is pretty cool too.

Whats your typical driving? City or Highway. If highway, a used TDI is the way to go. If city check out a used prius. Those are the only two I have experience with. TDI I drove for 5 years, (125K milage). The thing was a tank, never had any issues except for a replacing the alternator. Prius I drove for two days to St. Louis.

Have you already eliminated the Mini Cooper from your list?

Don't know enough about any of this stuff to comment, other that Mini Coopers are cool little cars. My neighbors daughter has a Mini Convertible and it is a stinking fun little rig.

Don't buy a Prius. Oh the horror....

TDi love is strong with me.

Love the Abarth. Love Minis. Other good sub-20k options are Impreza, Focus, Dart, and even the Cruze.

Mini Cooper is out for irrational personal reasons, which are not mine, yet by which I must abide, lest I receive no more adult pleasures at my whim.

TDI, eh?

TO THE INTERNET!!!!

I think it's down to a TDi Jetta or GTi for me.

I bought a 2005 Passat TDI for $12k to commute to work and let my aupair drive it on weekends. We've put 30k miles on it in the past year and I am happy happy happy with it. It typically pushes 42-43mpg.

Got my first taste of running the TDi in sub-zero temps this morning. Sure, she was a bit pissed off when I first fired her up, but after about a minute or two of idling she smoothed out.

Also, we did pretty well on some icy ass roads. Traction control worked better than expected, especially considering the stock "all season" tires are definitely tilted toward summer.

We typically return 42 on flat highway, but have seen 45 on a few trips.

Golf TDI could be a fun car, not sure how these things get up and go but I've considered ditching the SUV for a golf and a beater truck.

Miata is always the correct answer. Well usually. Ok, almost never. But still.

, new MkV Golf TDi will set you back some serious coin if you want it optioned up. Used, you could probably find a decent MkiV example for under 15k with moderate mileage on it.

A few tasteful mods and you have yourself a real fun to drive car. They aren't horrible stock either, so long as they have some decent rubber.

Mini cooper is ok my roommate has one and its really underpowered. Youve got to go for the Cooper S.

I drove another friends fiat and the same problem it was just way too slow.

I know you mentioned spending under 20k but ive read some good things about the new subaru brz.

Didnt read if you were looking for new or used but 20-22k could get you some nice used cars.

Test drove a chevy sonic, and will pass.

Test drove a new dodge dart... and I liked it quite a bit. The SXT Rallye, specifically.

It might be the ticket.

Thing is, I have not had a car payment since.... 2006. I am not eager at all to take one on. Considering another used piece of cheap junk... ugh, decisions, decisions...

Neognosis, thoughts on the Sonic? Still just another sh*tty rebadged Daewoo or?

Seen a few Darts around here lately. Defintely a sharp looking compact. I'm still partial to the Maz3 or Focus in that segment though. Love me some 5-door hatchback and the Dart doesn't offer it (yet).

I feel you on the payment thing. It is sure nice to not have a payment....

Im not so keen on Dodge's reliability. Try to get the best/longest warranty possible if you go the dodge route.

Don't worry about the Dart, it's actually a FIAT. They have a stellar reputation for reliability!

Arrow Arrow

Just kidding. Maybe. Laughing

I did not care for it, and I'm not going to lease or own something made in korea, so it's OUT.

Test driving a mazda 3 saturday. Still liking the Dart, but the sales guy is starting to irritate me. I'll report back on the Mazda 3 saturday, as well as any new development with the dodge guy.
