Background - I (Well my kids) have a wii and the older one (12) is bugging me for an Xbox for Xmas. So I go to Target to take a look and there sits a Wii U Deluxe. I went ahead and bought it thinking I can return it but may not find another one. So I need some help deciding what to get.

I have 2 boys (12 and 6) that play games on the Wii, PC and tablet. They like all kinds of games but mostly minecraft, Terraria, and mild war games.
The wife just wants to return the Wii U and get an Xbox. I told her if we did we would have to get the kinect bundle since it's $50 more and $100 seperate if we decide to get it later. So she is set on a 4GB bundle with Kinect (I don't have any old games and the nerd at Target said you can use a thumb drive for a little extra memory).
I haven't checked out the PS3 but am not opposed to it.

What the hell do I do? The wife is tired of talking about it so I come to my dear friends on the intraweb.

Do I keep the Wii U, get the Xbox, or get a PS3? What are the pros/cons of each of them taking into consideration the kids will use it almost exclusively so I am not too concerned with game selection since Call of Duty is a bit much for the younger one still.

None. Tell your kids to go play outside. If they really want to they can play nintendo at a friends house. This way you'll save money and your kids will build some muscles and character.

Xbox = better online, IMO
Ps3 = free online.

Ps3 move is like the xbox's kinect.

God damn... T is 12? Omfgwerold Sad

Anyhow, the Xbox and kinect might be your best bet. Msft has had an unreal run with the Xbox, and there is no end in sight. If you want to use a thumb drive you can get one of the new tiny ass ones for laptops that won't even be noticed.

Faust his kids do play outside.... Confused

Faust, G didn't see that witty retort coming. Thanks for the parenting tips. Unfortunately I live in the ghetto and won't send my kids outside due to the rampant crime. So I think having a kinect or Wii can give them the exercise they will need later in life in order to outrun hoodlums. Luckily I traded last month's foodstamps for some real Obama money so now I can afford to buy them a new console. They will build all the character they need while outrunning zombies and melting their brains.

Anyone have any useful advice?

chavez, Yeah I knew I was old when I had to come online to find out about video game consoles.

wakeboarderdave1, I don't think we would use the online very much. Taking that out of the equation is it a toss up? Should I even consider keeping the Wii U?

I haven't owned something made by Nintendo since the Super Nintendo. We've had every PlayStation and Xbox that have been made. Both are solid systems. I currently have a Xbox fwiw. I'd probably go with 360.

can't go wrong either way. ps3 plays bluerays, and i haven't heard about ring-of-death type issues with them that the xbox has. that said, i'm not exactly current on the console news. my xbox was stolen over christmas break in 2010-11, and i haven't replaced it.

I'd go with the 360. I have both, and never touch the PS3. I don't know why. The PS3 isn't bad or anything, but I just perfer the 360.

What do most of their friends have? That's probably what I'd go with, even if you don't think they are going to play online. They eventually will want to, so you might as well get what their friends have.

I'd get them what they're asking for (xBox) cuz its what they're asking for. That being said, I have both a ps3 and an xbox.

The xbox is collecting dust.

Benefits of the PS3:

Blue Ray
Free Online Gaming
Likely, a bit more durable

Benefits of the xBox:

Halo

Other than that, I don't really think the xBox offers any benefits over the PS3

My son (7) has a Wii and a 3DS XL. He loves all the Mario games. I play an XBox 360, one controller for me only and I mainly play shooters. So it's not really kid friendly. We have been looking at the WiiU as well. Decided on getting him an IPad 2 instead. He is really getting into reading chapter books and has read all the diary of a wimpy kid series.

There's probably a new xbox console coming out next year as well.

Thanks all. I think you're right about getting what they want. Even though it will end up in a bedroom eventually and have bluray, the PS3 may not be it. His friends have an Xbox so at least then he can talk to them about it.

wakeboarderdave1, Latest rumor I saw was late 2014 - 2015 but who knows?

IMO the fact that there is a new console coming "soon" is a reason to buy the Xbox. The games will be compatible so the library accumulated now will still be usable later.

Just a thought.

I have a 360 and my kids play the Kinect Sports games constantly. They are 7 and 4. I've had all of them and prefer the 360, because of the online play. If your oldest is 12 it will not be long before he wants to get online with his buddies.

Has backwards compatibility been announced? I don't follow all the updates on gaming, but I would never make an assumption on features of future systems unless it's been officially confirmed.

That being said, I'd probably buy an X-box if that's what they asked for and that's what their friends have

I think I'm safe making that assumption. It would be incredibly short sighted of MSFT to not include backwards compatibility.
