Not sure how many people on here have one but thought it might be good to start an ongoing thread with general GoPro info/questions. I just got one a few days ago (Hero 2) and have basically been obsessed with it since I got it. I can't get over how many options it opens up for creative shots.
I'll start things off with a good pole-cam build I found. Looks like a really solid design. Only change I'm going to make is to fill the pole with foam to stiffen it up and make everything float.
Been planning on getting a GoPro. Seems like that would be a nice accessory. Quick question, does a GoPro float on it's own? Like if I used that monopod in the water and one of the telescoping rods slipped out, would my GoPro go swimming with the fishes? _________________ You have just entered the twilight zone.
Oh yea I bought the rollbar mount for the gopro and it fits great on the ski pylon to video while wakeboarding. You can also attach it to your gun and take video of you shooting stuff. _________________ There'll be two dates on your tombstone/ And all your friends will read 'em/ But all that's gonna matter is that little dash between 'em...
Wakebrad, yeah, that should be fine. i got lucky w/ my find. like i said, it was used, and though it's not a big name brand, it's carbon fiber so it's a tad lighter and stronger.
definitely do get a gopro...or two. they can be fun.
you can see the gopro used taken in that first shot in this pic. (see upper left portion of the pic on the driver's side window)
Wakebrad, These things sink like bricks. Definitely get a float. I'm filling my pole mount with foam so it'll float if I do drop it. Not to mention I'm going to figure out some kind of float for the camera case itself. They sell an official gopro one, but I figure I can rig something up for cheaper.
Just ordered my GoPro last night! I need to do more research on accessories.
They're cheaper on amazon than on GoPro's website, and with prime it'll be here on Friday. Glad I checked before I ordered through their website. Bitches were trying to charge me tax too. _________________ You have just entered the twilight zone.
chavez, dammit! that's huge. No more Prime for me.
GnarShredd, nice! Gonna have to give it a test in the pool and the trampoline when it comes in this weekend. _________________ You have just entered the twilight zone.
Finally got some video. First set with the helmet cam on. Turned out pretty good I think, minimal editing so far. Planning on trying to sticky mount to the nose of the board too next time.
Wakebrad, The main problem I had mounting on the board was that every time I'd land a trick the camera would bounce forward when I smacked the water. The shock from the board would just flip it down. Nothing major but I had to keep fixing it every time I landed, even from ollies. Looked hella awesome though, especially on the tail where you can see the water around the board.
GnarShredd, so it stuck to the board find though? Didn't come undone and fall into the water? _________________ You have just entered the twilight zone.
Wakebrad, he's talking about the pivot. Those mounts are pretty damn strong. I don't know if you have but I've seen a fair handful of bike crash vids where they stayed put. _________________
GnarShredd, I've had the same problem when I was using it on the race truck. I've started using a pair of pliers to tighten down the bolts and it works much better. Those things should really have t-handles on them instead of being round so that you can really get them tight.
ridininmd, Nice clip. What mount did you use for that?
chavez, Yep, that's what I meant.
Wakebrad, I didn't have a float but I'd recommend getting one (picking one up tonight probably). It sticks to the board great and while I didn't expect it to go anywhere (the surf mount has HUGE surface area to stick to) it still made me a little nervous with all the vibration/smacking rails with my board although I'm sure it's fine, I'm just ultra paranoid about stuff going wrong. The mounts in general are extremely solid though.
That was using the suction cup stuck to the vent window. I have the helmet mounts stuck on the frame and body in a few different spots and use them a lot also. Just depends on the track we're racing on, if it's really muddy I can't use a lot of the cooler angles because it will just get covered in the first 5 seconds.
Also it sucks at night, I don't even bring it along anymore, I wish it had better settings for that.
ridininmd, Nice! I was wondering how good the suction cup mount was but I've seen a handfull of videos from outside airplanes, race cars, and with your video some serious off-roading/bouncing that show they can really hold their own. I've only tried mine on the door-panel and hood of my truck on regular roads up to about 45mph with no problem. Guess I won't have to worry about it.
we hooked up gopros to race cars (indy, nascar, drift, etc) using the suction cup mounts and they all held up well. we haven't lost one yet. *knock on wood* _________________ my demo reel DPC Films

I'm thinking some island. And Alaska is not a choice.
Tried to upload a video through iMovie last night (Just threw together some random clips from a few laps at the cable to clear my memory card). For some reason it's not showing up on the youtube page but I'll post the video here when I figure out what's wrong. Just some helmet cam and a board mount, got some neat stuff though.
Finally got it workin. I think the HD is still processing on youtube but it should be 720p once it's done. Didn't get much footage this time so this is only from a few laps and didn't really play with angles much. I finally got myself a float this week so I won't be worried about the camera falling off now. This edit is using just a board mount and a mount on the front center of my helmet.
Shot this one this evening, I finally worked up the nerve to stick the gopro to the bottom of my plane. I've got about an hour and a half of video from the flight but here's a quick edit.
