Looking for some info on doing an LED interior light installation. I am pretty comfortable on the installation, but was wondering if anyone out there knew of any suppliers or some wiring diagrams? If you have any photos of some installations you have done that would be great.
Thanks, Shawn

i would go with leds, not neons or cold cathodes, they just don't look as natural. for wiring diagrams and a great place to order leds go to www.lsdiodes.com or www.123leds.com i've had experience at both places and they are good. how are you going to install these? i would make a good strand outside the boat by soldering the legs together in parallel, then put them in a home made plastic tubing thats kind of foggy and then patch the possitive wire to a 5v or 12v source and then ground the negative.

the reason why i suggest putting them in a plastic tubing or something like that is to help distribute the light so the lights aren't as "spotty." putting hot glue over the lights is also a consideration, although it can alter the color slightly. good luck with your install, let me know if you have any problems.

btw, heres a another good explanation http://xbox.pablot.com/xbox/?site=casemodding&submenu=leds

and heres a resistor calculator, YOU WILL NEED TO USE RESISTORS!! otherwise you'll burn your leds or under power them. you can get them for cheap at radioshack.

but do not buy leds at radioshack, only resistors.

http://sickmods.net/resistorcalc.html

when using the calculator, use the advanced version, because your leds will be different ratings than the simple version uses as default.

Something I did along the sides of my boat... used LED under-car kits up under the sides... you can't see them - but they light up the cubby's down either side of the boat. The kit had two 4ft and two 3ft sections - so I mounted them end-to-end for 7ft down each side. I threw out the flasher control they used and combined the 5-segments into just solid bars... then actually hooked them up to a $5 music controller. When I'm on the river at night, the go with the beat of the music and look kinda cool. Total cost - about $70, and I didn't have to worry about the resistors, etc.

Yeah - I just didn't want to have to wire them... I may still do something like that in the bow just for additional accents though...

mgswed, mcd is the light intensity of the leds, the higher the number the brighter. i would go somewhere inbetween 8000, and 12,000 mcd. you should get 5 mm leds. good luck.

tmbrown, very true, wiring is very tedious, but i've done it a lot and got pretty quick at it .

How does the pricing work for these things? I see its like .45 cents. Is that for 1 little dot or a whole strand or what?

for .45 cents you will get on little light. since your doing the cupholders, i would buy about.... 40. 20 in each gunnel. since your buying in bulk, you might want to buy them on ebay, i buy them on ebay a lot but you'll have to wait up to 20 days to get them cuz the seller is in hong kong.

Jensen... I was thinking of doing this as well... and wiring them to my stern light switch... do you still need resistors in that case?

I went with the speaker led rings. I like the way they look, even though the white is more purplish...

I did my entire boat for barely more than $100. Interior Blue courtesy lighting, pink cooler lighting just to match the pink stripe on the outside of my boat, and red LED gauges. Also have blue lights underneath the swim platform. Have lights in all of the cupholders and the storage compartments.

Only used oznium.com and ebay
