Looking on Ebay at wakeboards suitable for a beginner, I see a number with kitesurf style bindings that are mostly neoprene and velcro, or 'sandal' type. Are those still OK for beginners, or is the boot or open toe boot type the only one worth considering now?

Hi Max,
Jobe do a version of the Brooklyn 139 that comes with sandal style bindings and a lot of people we know love them. Sandals are quicker and easier to get into, but if you're at the stage where you're getting serious air, or perhaps you just prefer that "locked in" feel, then they're probably not going to be right for you.
Pros - cheaper, quicker
Cons- more likely to come off under serious load _________________ Wakeboards,

For wakeboarding, get boots, for kiteboarding almost everyone chooses sandals. I wear boots for both.
There is no debate here for wakeboarding: boots. You can start off cheap if you want, but don't use sandals to wakeboard. _________________ You have just entered the twilight zone. |

If you're getting sandal bindings on a wakeboard you may as well save money and get a wakeskate. Sandal bindings offer no support and a "one foot in one foot out" twisting leg fracture is a easy possibility (think your body twists but one leg stays in the binding and the board doesn't twist with you).
You can find boots for cheap nowadays so there's no excuse to get anything but that. |
