I've been wanting a camera that I can use for wakeboarding (from my POV, like on the board, using a chest harness, or something). I am thinking about getting a GoPro HD Hero 960, but I don't want to buy it and then be disappointed. Does anyone have any thoughts on the GoPro cameras (if you have used one)? Are they durable, reliable, etc.?

Also, are there any other cameras that could easily compete against the GoPro cameras? I looked at the Contour HD a little, but haven't researched it enough to know if it's a good camera.

Thanks!

I got one this summer and had it mounted to the nose of my wakeboard. it is only the SD version but it was rock solid all summer. Here's a clip.

Nice, so are you using the suction cup mount or the mounting pad (3M thing)? I just don't want to lose the camera so I'm wondering what would be the best way to secure it.

Also, is that Eagle Lake in Minnesota by chance? It looks exactly like the lake I wakeboard at (Eagle Lake) lol.

No the lake is in Michigan. I am using the 3M flat adhesive mount.

I've used both the GoPro and Contour (both were 720p versions tho) and IMO, the Contour recorded at a higher quality. No matter what I did, I always seemed to get a wavy look with the GoPro. With the Contour, I have not had that problem. Here is an example of how good the Contour footage can look in just 720p at only 30fps.

This is a friends shifter kart racing video BTW: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIrNNEbWmi0

Be sure to watch it in 720p, not the default 360.

using GoPro HD Hero for 1+ year. no complanes. Did lake and snow skiing shots. Love it. Can't say about other brands. Never used them.
