|
|
Hi Gang - for starters the boat is a 1986 Ski Nautique 2001 in pretty decent condition...
Well the mobile mechanic in the area spent some time working on my rig yesterday and came across a few items that I'd like to run by the crew here.
1. immediately behind the exhaust mainifolds there is a length of hose that connects to a pair of blue fiberglass "mufflers" which are then connected to the exhaust flippers on the transom. These mufflers do not appear to be cracked, but when looked at close up, they seem to be pourous and water beads through them at a decent rate. Does anyone have eny experience with these - had them fail, leak or break, one of my theories was that the water sacs may have helped to sort of crush them slightly allowing for that passage of water. They need to be replaced and I'm wondering about the differences between epoxying them, or replacing them (maybe big buck$$)
2. The boat has a holley carb, and it was basically pissing gasoline in a fine stream from the rear bowl. While we were working on it yesterday someone had to hold a finger on the thing so that it didnt "piss" in this way. The mechanic said he had never seen an issue like that. Can anyone tell me if they've seen this problem, and if you can just buy the bowl separately on an older Holley carb, rather than getting a brand new carb.
Thanks for your help and insight.

I have never seen that exact problem with the Exhaust manifolds. I would suggest you replace them though. We replaced ours after we replaced the flooring, stringers, and refiberglassed the floor of our Nautique.
You may want to have a shop look at that Carb if it is giving you fits. Holley Carbs are gas guzzelers by nature anyway....but you could have a problem...
You may need to get that checked. _________________ Ride Harder...Bottom Out! |

Wow - very cool - so sorry to hit you with 21 questions - but I have another...
Do you remember where you obtained the parts from? A lead would be hugely appreciated becuase I dont think my mechanic will be using many sources so I wanted to try to reduce the bill.
Any info you have would be appreciated...
Thanks,
Erik

Try www.skidim.com It is a shop called discount inboard marine. They deal specifically with inboards, esp. older nautys and MCs. They will have the parts you need.
What I think you are talking about is the muffler or silencer. I would check and see if the hose clamps are tight around them. Before that tho, I would take them off and look at them. They may be cracked where the hose clamps go. That isn't that big of a deal, but it needs to be taken care of. You can fix it yourself if you know how to fiberglass, but if you aren't much of a DIYer, then I would just purchase one.
As far as the carb goes, have you checked the O-rings that go around the bolts that bolt the bowl on and are used to drain the carb? Sometimes when someone drains the bowl, they strip those o-rings. As far as the carb goes, you can check either DIM or maybe Summit for buying a bowl. |

No problem about the 20 questions. You can probably put them in your self. we did.
You may want to replace the exhaust hoses that connect the manifold to the mufler. That hose is pretty expensive...but I am not sure what it costs per foot. I doubt it is neccessary, but it is always nice to do things when you you already have access to them...

| I had to fix one of my fiberglass mufflers on my old boat. I bought a fiberglass kit at WalMart for under $10 & did it myself. It was easy, just follow the directions when mixing the resin. In your case, it sounds like you could just scuff up the exterior of the mufflers & just recoat the entire muffler with fiberglass resin. Boomer |

Hey thats really nice of you to offer. I'm in MA, but I will post as soon as I know anything additional about the carb. The carb issue stumped my mechanic which kind of suprised me. I appreciate the feedback guys - thanks!

If it where me,I would just buy them from www.skidim.com and fix them the right way. It was a very easy fix taking all of 30 min!!! I hope you get it all worked out.

| We repaired the mufflers ourselves on our '82. Wasn't a big deal at all. Do it yourself. I'm sure you'll find something else that would need a little money thrown at it. |

FUNKSTER:
How did your mufflers crack? I know that it can be a terrible situation if they crack. I called skidim.com today and they had them for 99 bucks each, Gonna order a pair as soon as I talk to my mechanic.
RIVERFREAK:
yeah they throw a killer wake, no doubt. They're just cramped inside. With a tower and careful ballast though, there can be plenty of room for 4 or so, and plus they are a killer deal and a great boat. Really classy lines too!

I had the carb issue in my 78 nauti with a 4 barrel holly carb. Your best bet is to take it in and have it fixed, I think it was a float that was stuck but it was a couple years ago and so I cant really remember. I also had a buddy that ran "sea foam" through a tank of gas and that seemed to help as well his pissing carb. _________________ www.midwestmastercraft.com

Erik,I really don't know!! I'am guessing by the look of them...age!!! There where little cracks down the side, running the whole length of the silencer/muffler. I think they just had enough and the little cracks turned into a big slit. I orderd mine up from skidim. They are really good people to work with. I have orderd a few things from them and I get great service every time. _________________ If you wanna make it,

Funkster - youre right I called them and the tech I spoke to was awesome. I said "you must be a senior tech" and he said no he was only there for about 2 yrs. Awesome service though. If more stuff goes wrong with my boat I'm surely going to order from them.
By the way - killer profile pic. I changed mine too!!! hahaha

How was replacing the floor and stringers? I have some weak spots in my 2001 and I have been told just wait until it gets really bad because replacing the floor is some serious work.. |

I will be honest with you...it was a biatch to replace...
You should not have to replace the floor in a 2001...i would think that would be really soon for the floors to go. especially for the age of your boat. I would see if your warranty covers the floor for a specific amount of time.
1st you have to lift the motor out of the boat...remove the pylon, seats, motor cover, transom panel, fuel tank, etc. Basically you will have to cut the floor out.
If we had to do it over again...we would have let our local shop do it. It was a major ordeal. After you replace the stringers and the floor, you have to fiberglass the floor again...and make sure you go up the sides about 2 feet (if I remember correctly). Once the floor is in...you have to get the flotaion foam sprayed under the floor....they drill holes and inject the foam under the floor boards. Make sure it is oil resistant.
I would suggest getting someone else t do it...but if you are ready for a challenge. _________________ Ride Harder...Bottom Out! |

| That doesn't sound like a whole lotta fun to me. I guess I'll just keep my fingers crossed that my floor holds out awhile longer. I like projects but that seems a little rich for my blood... |

yeah...it is a major task to under take. I would reccomend to anyone planning to replace their floors to et someone else to do it. Do not get me wrong...I am glad we did it ourselves, but there was a lot more to it than we originally thought.
We kept finding out new things we had to do along the way... _________________ Ride Harder...Bottom Out! |
