Is a battery box absolutely necessary? I'm hooking up a dual battery setup (1 starter, 1 deep cycle) in the passenger compartment. Basically I don't want to spend $75 on a box or build one myself unless I absolutely have to.

I assume at a minimum I'd need to secure the batteries with a tray? What did you guys do?

This is all you need:

Shouldn't run you more than $20 or so. Ebay is your friend!

You do need a box of some description that allows tie-down. I assume the NMMA and other bodies in the USA have regs for this, as I know here in Europe it is a requirement.

Basically, you just need something that will stop the battery sliding around in the event of rough water or of a collision. This also protects your wiring connections.

Hope that helps,

Mike

I got an Optima D34M battery which says Group size 34. Why do I only seem to be able to find Group 24 or 27 battery boxes? Obviously I want to get the smallest box possible...why don't they sell a Group 34 box?

Pop Addict, Ignore Optima and their crazy group size.... It's a standard size battery and will go ina normal size battery box from Attwood or anyone else. Jut call your local boat dealer/chandler/marina and grab a std size boat battery box.

Coincidentally I have the same battery (except a yellow top) sitting next to me on charge in a box rigtht now so I know it works!! Laughing
