I have an 09 X-star. My sister was driving and ran over my handle. The handle took some small chunks of Gel Coat/ Fiberglass out of the hull around the prop area. I keep the boat in the water. I figured I'd fix it at the end of the season. I spoke to a MC mechanic and he said, "no biggie fix it when you pull it out." BUT I was reading another guys response on here about not having a Gel Coat scrach in the water. Do I have something to worry about? I know around the prop area the hull is super thick. Thanks! |

How much time is left for your season? And when you say you keep it in the water is it on a lift or actually in the water 24/7? _________________ Wakeskating

The incident happend about a month ago. I keep the boat in the water 24/7. The season is almost over. I can ride till Thanksgiving, but I'll take it out right now if necessary. Thanks for the response. |

Repairing the gel coat is a simple job, just remember to let the area dry for a while before you try the repair based on it being in the water. If its a "chunk" how deep into the glass sis it go? can you see the fiber strands or just the resin?? |

Ok, so after another look. I can't see any fiberglass, but one of the cuts is deep into the (black) resin.
Currently I'm letting the area dry out. What are some recommendations for the repair?
I would like the repair to match up perfectlly. Is that possible for me to do? Can I get it perfect? Should I let a gelcoat guy do the repair?
My boat is yellow/black, in that area it's yellow.
Thanks, I appreciate any help. |

You cando it fairly easily. You can build up gel to about 3/8. Grind out the area around the damage into a"V" shape but dont go crazy with it. Get the color code for the gel from the dealer and get the gel. Fill the areas that need it. sand off the excess after it dries. Fill any low spots until it is smooth. wet sand it down and buff to a shine. All the steps are only a few minutes but be sure to let it cure between sandings.
No one will ever know!!! |

Ok cool, thanks. One question: Should I put anything in there before the Gel? i.e. put marine tex, then put the get on top? or just go straight in with the gel? Thanks for the help. |

if the damage is deep then i would fill it first. I wouldnt use marine tex even thou it is easier. I would use fiberglass resin or epoxy with a filling agent such as micro bubbles or cavasil. |

from the description of your damage, I think you can go just gel You stated you weren't in the glass and if you "V" it out as described above and still aren't deep into the glass just fill it up. _________________ Today is a chance to become a greater person than the person we were the day before. |
