I'm trying to land my first invert. I can get good w2w air but my rotation is messed up. I am trying a backroll by doing the backwards cartwheel style, not load and release and not mexican.

However, 3/4ths the way through, I am turning my body away from the direction I'm going. So instead of facing the boat I turn to where I came from and I catch my back edge.

I will post a video later but I was just curious if anyone has any tips on how to keep myself facing the boat the whole time. Handle position?

btw those crashes hurt a lot lol

sorry for long delay, here is a video of one of my attempts. my more recent attempts have more height as i am extending better, but I still have the same backside rotation and back edge catch.

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/4uGhDupdZ_w?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/4uGhDupdZ_w?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

I don't really understand how you are ending up catching a backside edge on a backroll? Are you spinning frontside like a roll to revert but too far? Post the vid, I think you'll get a lot more help.

You may be letting the rope move away from your lead hip without noticing. Try to keep the rope and handle at your lead hip. This may help sovle your rotation problem.

Edge away from the boat more. It looks like you are trying to throw the trick too much. Stand taller at the bottom of the wake and edge away from the boat. If you do that, your chest will open up more in the direction that you are travelling instead of your back.

As I understand the backroll, there are sort of 3 ways to throw it:
mexican - basically a front flip with your chest facing where you came from, rotating around your lead hip

backward cartwheel - where you face the boat the whole time and do a backwards cartwheel around the rope, which shouldnt move much and be in front of your belly button

load and release - sort of a mix between the other two, where your board initially goes out behind you, you do a backwards cartwheel and a front flip combined.

I may have this wrong, and please correct me if I am wrong.

If I'm right, I'm trying to do the backwards cartwheel version, as for me, the mexican is kinda ugly and the load and release is too difficult for me to nail down. I feel like I "get" the cartwheel version mentally and have the best chance at landing it.

However, I can't figure out why I'm ending it with that backside rotation, which makes me catch my back edge.

Thanks for your help!

to better illustrate my point, here are 3 videos I found on youtube (all not me) of what i think are the 3 backroll variations. Again, I'm trying to do the 2nd kind. Should I be trying the load release instead?

mexican - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaxYclNlvqw&feature=related

backward cartwheel - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jA-HMxbIlk8&feature=fvw

load and release - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ce9PfvvZPv8&feature=related

Sorry it goes out of frame. gf isn't the best recorder. But you can see I still have the same rotation problem. Any advice would be appreciated!

You need to try working on keeping your shoulders square to the boat. Mid rotation your shoulders are turning parallel to the boat which is giving you the back side rotation. If you make sure your shoulders are square with the boat this should eliminate that backside turn.

Not only that, but on your videos, you keep landing on the wake. You have to clear it. I mean, I suppose it is possible to land it, but it's extremely hard to land any trick where you are landing. As mentioned, stand taller at the wake, and edge hard.

I suck pretty bad, but I can land back-rolls more consistently than my neighbors cat pisses in my yard. I do them, mexican and cartwheel style. the only difference for me is two hands vs. one. Every time I let go with my back hand, it turns out looking mexican. But I land them both styles every time, and my approach is the same either way.

I really think landing out in the flats will make the difference for you. Just about 2 more feet distance will take care of it. Just be prepared to keep riding after the flip. You're like 95% there.

Yep. I ride at 65'. I can clear them at 70, easily. But I can't clear the wake toe side at 70.

Good luck.
