First the rope question. I have a fairly standard ~10-15 year old ski boat, which has nothing special, no ballast, etc. I was wondering what rope length I should be using when i'm between the beginner and intermediate levels (I'd give myself a 2 on a scale of 1 - 5). My rope can go anywhere from about 60-80 feet, including the handle.

Question #2: I have a Giro Encore 2 Snowboarding helmet, and I was wondering if I CAN use it on water, and, if so, SHOULD i use it? Basically, would i be less likely to get injured if i wear a helmet?

Picture of helmet: (Earpieces and inner padding can be removed)

I have an older i/o and I pulled 15 feet out when I was towing off the back ski hook and put 10 back in when I installed my tower. I basically played with it for awhile watching where the sweet spot in the wake was and adjusted for that.

As far as helmets go, I have no idea since I don't wear one on snow either. I would say unless you are hitting rails and kickers you really don't need one. If you search the forums there are lots of threads that debate the pro's and cons of wearing one.

15 ft ... Thats gotta be a typo. I ride 65ft out. but i got a tower on my i/o
Id say just get out there and try different lenghts. feel it out. Can you w2w yet?

As far as the helmet thing. Its up to you. I wear one snowboarding because snow hurts/ rails hurt, and it gives my bigger balls to try tricks when I got it on.

I know there was a pro wakeboarder that crashesd and hit his head on sunken log . He almost died. But for me Ive never wanted to wear one. It seem's like it would hurt to crash whit it on...

I think he was trying to say he removed 15 feet from the rope which, if it were an 80 footer, would have him riding at 65.

I see no cons to riding with a helmet if you so choose. I hit a kicker for the first time at a comp last weekend and therefore wore a helmet riding for the first time as well, and I had no vision problems even in inverts. As long as it fits snug, you're good to go. A wake specific helmet would be better, but a snowboard helmet would do fine. As far as how much it helps you when you hit the water, I don't know about that. Slapping the back of your head is probably where it would really benefit you, but I did not experience it.

mucksoup, Yeah I meant that I took 15 ft. off of the rope, and after I put a tower on put 10' back on since my tow point moved forward by about 10'
