My battery was dead and I had to get a booster jump from the marina. I didn't shut it off all day but the battery was still dead at the end of the day. Does this mean I have to buy a whole new battery or is there a way to bring this battery back to life?

Sounds bad to me, you can try to hook it up to a charger for a few hours and see if it holds a charge. Another option is yank it out and run it up to an auto parts store and have them test it.

Sounds like a dead man. Try checking the water levels in each cell. Sometimes they can be low and this will cause your problem. A lot of usage on a battery that doesn't have enough water will usually weaken or destroy it, though.

Yea I'm sure it's a gonner then because this is the second time I had to give it a boost. Any suggestions on buying a new battery. I noticed there are lots of options Deep Cycle, Dual Hybrid, etc.

Time for a new battery. I would reccomend an AGM deepcycle or an AGM cranking battery depending on your application.

XS Power (http://4xspower.com/) makes some great batteries. You also can't go wrong with Deka, Stinger or Optima.

Don't you guys think we ought to have VG6 tell us his setup first? What are you using it in? Single battery? Dual Battery? Do you have a high-powered sound system or lots of accessories you run with the engine off?

Let's not get him in a $150+ Optima if he just needs a $40 starting battery from Wal-Mart.

pet575, agreed, however I personally still prefer a sealed, maintenance free battery over a flooded cell even if it is for just starting my boat, hence my reccomendation. The only consideration would be reserve capacity and number of batteries based on how VG6 plans to utilize the batteries.

Of the brands that I mentioned, I would probably go for Deka if the battery was solely for starting with Optima being a second choice. XS and Stinger would be my choices for running a sound system or lots of accessories with the engine off. I'd also reccomend a shore charger if that is the primary purpose.

All of this said, if cost is the primary consideration, a flooded cell is going to be the best choice.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'm going to look at all my options and prices and let you know what I decided.

My setup is basic..I don't run much but the stereo when the engine is off. I have some GPS stuff and I guess the bilge pump comes on in a big storm if water gets into the boat. I do plan to install some tower lights this summer or maybe a big spot light and in a perfect world lots of electronic gadgets so I may look at the XS and Stinger. Unfortunately cost is a consideration because my wife thinks I spend too much on boating but what the boat wants the boat gets what can I do right? Very Happy

Get the battery tested at the parts store before you buy a new one, if it's good then your alternator is shot.

AGM is nice for BIG systems but dollar for dollar you group 31 deep cycle marines will be the best... if you got the space and room and if you run dual batteries go with a starting battery in one bank and two 6v golf cart batteries (wired in series) for your second battery... this combo will have plenty of reserve capacity for you... but those take up quite a bit of space so if you can't afford the space you might wanna look into AGM as they can be mounted in any angle or tight space

This is turning into an interesting project for me. I found some schematics and I think I'm going to set up something like this but more like the budget version. $$$

if you are on a budget then I wouldn't go with Optima's and look at the Basspro's version of their charger... I got a two bank 10 amp charger with the multistep charging for like 100 bucks or something TYD... also kicker components are one of the best bang for your buck systems... I just redid mine.... i also used an ACR instead of the Perko but whatever floats your boat... haha

VG6, that's a bit more than just replacing the battery. Laughing Laughing

If you decide to embark on that project, you might want to consider an ACR (like petrey10 mentioned) + Switch combo rather than the switch that you have shown in your schematic, since it will you allow you to charge both batteries while still keeping your starting battery and your house battery loads isolated.

I'd just get a combo style battery for now, in a pretty big size, and see how you do. Then decide if you want to add a second battery and everything that would go along with that.

It's obviously for cranking, yet I'm amazed at how many people said deep cycle.

Yea I have a tendency to dream about expensive improvements when I'm deciding what to do but in reality I will probably get a cheap cranking battery ...throw it in... and head to my favorite spot. Anyway I feel alot more educated about what my options are and what I need.

Like I said, take a look at the combo batteries. You still get a good cranking battery that has the ability for more long slow draw. Bass Pro, Academy, Wal-Mart all have decent batteries. Go for a 27 series or bigger.
