Buddy's boat is dewinterized, but water temps are probably still too cold for my blood and lack of winter riding gear. Although I have succesfully started off the platform as well as stepped back onto it. If I could put the two together I could surf without getting wet.
I really want to progress some this year beyond just riding, but I don't even know where to begin. Any thoughts? I see, but can't figure out how, you do the one big pump to generate speed. When I pump it is like the front and back legs are opposite and I am zigzagging forward. When your son (referenced because I have seen video of him) does it, it almost looks like he jumps up higher on the wave face, and the board comes up with him. Is that somewhat how it works?
There are a couple of ways to pump - one is where you swim the board forward - there are short little turns that allow the fins to engage and propell you faster than the wave. The other is where you pump the front foot up and down and use the back foot to help left the front of the board.
James also generates speed for his aerials using a single pump - he rides up on top of the wake and then down before doing that bottom turn up and into the wake - from there it's basically a skateboard ollie.
This youtube video should show the aerials and James wasn't paying attention and almost went out the back - he catches up while pumping.
I guess I was doing the swim technique. I was talking more about his one big pump you described. It almost looks like he jumps to the top of the wave and the board comes with him.
@ Nooga - yeah, James does a bottom turn and then ollie's off the lip.
@ PKwakeboard - James is starting his own board brand this summer, that he has named FlyBoy Wakesurf. That blue board in the pictures is the prototype for the brand. James has started a Facebook page and I think he's on Myspace and Twitter also, but I have difficulty following all that!
Very cool!!! Wonderful thing to bee proud of your son for!
On a side note, we were out on the water this weekend. Air was about 85, water about 60! My crazy kids actually got in and went swimming! (along with kneeboarding & tubing). I was a wuss & threw on the wetsuit for some wakeboarding action. _________________ lovin' life!

Well I wasn't brave enough to attempt it without a rope but was confident I could pull it off with the rope out. It went as planned and I was able to surf with only the shins getting wet from some spray. My buddy thought I was crazy for not borrowing his wetsuit, but I wanted the pressure on to keep me from going down. It was nice to just be able to ride for a bit. Can't wait for warmer weather.
Edited to say: I am fully aware that this has the potential for some super rope burn or to get caught in the handle and drug. Don't try it unless you are prepared for either one of those two things to become a reality. Looking back we should have flipped the rope around so the handle was on the boat side of the rope. I am also very confident in my climber developed gripped strenght that if something went wrong I was just going to hold onto the rope until the boat stopped which would have prevented any rope burn. But all worked out well.

Even having the rope on the opposite side of your body woud've went a long way in prevention. Just a thought... Back to the pics!!! _________________ lovin' life!
I was prepared to deal with the consequences. We didn't feel like switching the tanks so my regular stance buddy surfed backside. In his set up the rope was on the otherside of his body and being pulled away from him. He said if let go of the rope he wouldn't have been able to get it back.
Thanks Okie - James rips that's for sure. This board also has some amazing pop - James was riding out in the flats - we were working up to 11, so maybe we were around 9 or so? James did an ollie on that board - generated amazing height on relatively "soft" water. That isn't a picture jumping over the lip, it's just ollieing out in the flats! I swear it's 3 feet of air! _________________ Buy my kid's board!
I'm going to try and post a YouTube Video - I just suck at this stuff! Wish me luck! If I get it to work - chek the surface reverse at about 45 seconds in.
I haven't got my video of my first time out but I can't seem to be able to let go of the rope and stay up with the wake... I have a Tige 20i and had three people in the boat (no ballast) the wave was nice and big but couldn't figure out a way to get the rope to slack is there a secret
