jryoung has gone absolutely awol, and we're a month post signing day, so i'm taking the reigns.

first, how did your team do on signing day? what about other teams in your conference? or other notable signings/news heading into 2010?

texas finished w/ the #3 ranked recruiting class in 2009, but i'll take it over either florida or usc. <of course you will jt - you are a homer!> true enough, but rankings are based on stars, and each state is capped on the number of 5* players, so texas is always going to fall short there due to almost 100% recruting in state. besides, rankings aren't absolute - i think any team w/i 5 or so spots of another is pretty much equal.

why do i like the texas class so much? dominating the state, and DEFENSE!!!

top 3 players in texas (longhorns have whiffed at the top of the state in recent years - for a variety of reasons)
15 of the top 25
19 of the top 50

on d, the longhorns simply CLEANED UP, especially on the front 7.

#1, #2, #4 DE in tx, and jeffcoat was the #1/2 de in the nation overall
#1, #2, #6 DT in tx
#1 LB in the nation, #2, #3 LB in tx - that's some elite talent at lb that texas simply hasn't pulled in lately.

that's 7 of the top 115 players in the nation in the front 7 for the next couple of years (9 of top 150 when you add the DBs) - all KINDS of fired up to see that!

also excited about what muschamp is bringing to the table in terms of expanding texas' reach. he singlehandedly pulled the best player in ohio to texas, and away from tosu and florida - that's something they have NEVER been able to do, or even really tried to do before. can't tell you how excited that approach makes me for future years (coach boom is already in on several elite oos players for 2011).

sick wr class as well w/ the #1, #2, #3, #6, #7 WRs in tx - #13, #20, #73 overall nationwide (espn).

not happy w/ the RB pull overall - only one, and while he has ridiculous numbers, he played 1A ball (smallest 11man class in tx). big, athletic kid, but i'll reserve judgement til i've seen him against better competition (although he did have a hell of a showing at the army all-american game). i really, really wish things would have gone differently w/ seastrunk, as i think he's just a world class running back. they didn't and i think he's in a great situation for him up at oregon - really hope he can keep his head on straight and have a great career up there. pretty down year for rb in the state, and the horns are deep there, so i'm ok w/ it.

not thrilled w/ OL either. our weakest unit overall and we only pulled 2. i like them both, but we needed more bodies here. i don't know what our issue is w/ recruting on the ol, but i'm sick and tired of seeing names that should be on the back of soccermom suburbans - i want some mean mofos here and we have been getting soft whitebread types the last 4 years.

aggy pulled in a seriously talented group on the ol - they really cleaned up here. #1, #3, #5. all top 25 overall in tx, and 2 more in the top 70 overall. that's freakin' excellent, and the right track for them, imo. they'll win that fanbase back in a heartbeat if they can play a smashmouth run game (and win w/ it).

biggest pickup for aggy imo - getting dat nguyen to coach ilb from the cowboys. dude is an aggy legend and by all accounts, a heck of a coach as well.

my favorite ag recruit: mister jones. how sweet is that name? incidentally, the only other cat named mister i've ever met was an ag as well.

losing nelson to ou hurts, i don't care what kind of spin anyone wants to put on it. aggy was his backup school and he handled that whole thing pretty poorly, imo. wish he'd have stayed committed to aggy - not a fan of that level of talent going to ou.

Think Michelle and I will forgo a trip to South Bend to take the family to Cancun....

Though I have to say I am a little disappointed. It would have been a fun trip.....few nights in Chicago, day trip to South Bend.... The game being the second week of November makes the decision a little easier....

jt09, I think you pretty well covered it. Nelson really pissed me off. I'm not sure I'd characterize us as a backup school to OU, but he did do a lot of shopping around after committing. He handled it really poorly though, screwing us over on signing day.

I'm really excited about the new coaches we got on defense. DeRuyter has shown the ability to do more with less in a hard hitting 3-4. Love it. Dat back and a solid recruiter from Purdue with a knack for pulling kids out of SEC country.

Big XII is going to be down this year and we need to win 8+ games this season if we're on the right track.

I'm interested to see how tech will fare with Tubs as the HC. He says he's not going to change the offense but then dumped most of the offensive coaching staff and wants to add more of a running game. I just can't see him staying out of the offense if they start to struggle at all. Defensive recruiting should get better but I can't see them pulling the kids to maintain their level of success the last decade.

texas is loading up again on recruits. I'm ready for that engine to sputter but Mack is unstoppable at this point.

Wakebrad, i don't think you guys were a backup to ou, but to anyone. i don't think he ever intended to play there, but he wanted to be committed to someone, for whatever reason. if we had room for him, he'd have been a horn.

i think tubbs is going to fail miserably at tech, especially early. there's no way he sticks to that air raid o, and even if he tries, no one runs it like leach. i agree w/ you - if they struggle (and they will), he will revert to power football in a heartbeat.

texas is loading up again. 17 commits already:

3 of the top 4 players in tx
8 of the top 25 players in tx
15 of the top 50 players in tx

#1 dt
#1, #2, #4, #5, #6 ol
#1, #4, #7 lb
#1, #2 db
#1 te
#2, #3 wr
#2 qb
#8 rb (likely the #1 fb, but the rankings aren't split out that way right now)
#6 ath (wr/db)

fyi - this is a STUPID DEEP year for running backs in texas. 21 of the top 150 players in the state are rbs. 4 of the top 10.

decent chance texas pulls 2 of the top 4:

#1 overall - malcolm brown, 6'/210
#5 overall - herschel sims, 5'10"/190
#7 overall - aaron green, 5'10"/178
#10 overall - brandon williams, 6'1"/188

i'd like to pull brown and williams. think green follows his brother (cousin?) to nebraska. think sims ends up at ou - he's good, but i'm done w/ midgets for a while at tx. if we can only have one, i want brown. he's a freakin' BEAST!

aggregate rankings of texas preps:

Well, not that any cares about BSU, but....

They had very few schollies to give since they had such a young team. It sounds like they made the most of what they had though. Picked up some studs. I am excited for next year. In fact, I've already got my first C note in play. I would have had more $$$ in already if a couple of you would have taken my action.

Hm...makes sense. Rutgers would get a nice paycheck and the Big 10 would get the NY market.

http://espn.go.com/blog/sportscenter/post/_/id/34810/joe-schads- 2010-top-100-college-football-players-to-watch

Now that Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy have left for the NFL, three new quarterbacks are getting ready to take center-stage at Florida (John Brantley), Oklahoma (Landry Jones) and Texas (Garrett Gilbert). I have no idea WTF Locker was thinking by staying. Good news for you pricks, but WTF is all I can say.

It is entirely possible that he gave up tens of millions by staying. When the NFL does their salary negotiations after this season, the first thing I think that will be negotiated is rookie salaries. Why? Cuz they can't defend themselves, and the veteran players don't really care - in fact I'd bet that a lot of them are pissed/jealous/etc at these rooks coming in having done jack schit on the pro level making more than seasoned trusted vets.

Anyhow, Purple Jesus FTW. I don't know how Sark did it, but kudos.

churchy, what do you mean by lost? Injury, transfer, NFL?

Skimming the top 100 I only saw 2...#5 and #10, which Im sure are going to be HUGE...Im really curious to see how Darren Evans fits in next year.

3 guys in the top 55 for A&M (and it'd probably be 4 if Jeff Fuller didn't get hurt). Including one stud on the defensive side of the ball. Sweet...yet another chance to underachieve to our talent level. No excuses this year with a stacked o-line and a servicable defense.

Injury... he was pretty banged up last year, and the coaches said they were lucky he made it through the season. They said, "his body is just worn out".

Vereen is 50 spots better than 73 if the OL stays halfway healthy.

My team has the #1 player, but (a big one at that).. it's our only player in the top 100.

He did put up bigger numbers than Tebow as a sophomore with a much less talented team around him last year.

More off-field trouble for Oregon

By Ted Miller
Oregon backup linebacker Josh Kaddu, 20, was cited early Saturday on the charge of minor in possession of alcohol, according to the Eugene Register-Guard.

This will surely again raise questions about whether coach Chip Kelly is getting through to his players on their off-field conduct.

Are you guys serious... ?? After everything that has been going on, don't you think Chip should have had some serious talks with his team regarding acceptable behavior, team image, making good decisions, etc.

IMO, he never should have let a twice suspended Blount back on the team. Yes, it may have been a nice thing to do for a kid that may have never made it through school otherwise, but it made a statement to all about how things were going to be run under his watch. This was only the beginning of the downward spiral.

churchy, if chip walks now, you won't have any fun laughing at the ducks when they really do implode the way you think they will. you are supposed to root for coaches who are hurting your rivals to stick around. texas fans wanted rc slocum and then franochio to stay forever!

Dude, this is college football...arrest records are usually followed closely by lots and lots of wins. Chip's doing a GREAT job. I predict back to back Rose Bowls.

Are you serious? It's a friggin MIP. Your hard on would be more understandable if the guy had gotten into the car and took it for a joyride and got popped w/ GTA and DUI.

What's puzzling is that if this was due to Chip Kelly not knowing how to properly discipline his players, you would think Bellotti would step in and tighten sh*t down for the benefit of the program. I can't imagine that Bellotti would give Kelly coach-in-waiting status just to fire him a year or two later.

then maybe those kids should take control themselves.

honestly, i don't know what the big deal is. they've had a couple of issues in a short amount of time. some aren't going to go anywhere - the masoli burglary one, for example - and some are just part of kids being kids. plenty of college kids get dwis that don't play football as well. i haven't seen anything out of eugene that is anything more than fodder to poke fun at duck fans over.

I don't have a big issue with an MIP.... it is the series of events that's the issue.

Masoli, Embry to be charged in frat house theft
BY JACK MORAN

University of Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli is being charged with second-degree burglary, according to court records.

Masoli and former UO wide receiver Garrett Embry will both be arraigned on the charges Friday afternoon in Lane County Circuit Court, records show.

Both have been under investigation in connection with an alleged Jan. 24 theft at Sigma Alpha Epsilon at 812 E. 14th Ave. Fraternity members reportedly accused the pair of stealing laptop computers, a guitar and other items from the house.

Also, it will be interesting to see what kind of team punishment James receives after pleading guilty to assaulting his girlfriend.

Accused Oregon running back LaMichael James will change his plea
By Ken Goe, The Oregonian

Running back LaMichael James will appear in court at 8:30 a.m. Friday in courtroom 305 of the Lane County Courthouse for a hearing to change his plea.

A law enforcement source has told The Oregonian that he's expected to change his plea from not guilty to no contest, as part of a plea agreement that includes anger management, other punishment and gets him easier access to the school and a return to his athletics programs.

Springfield police arrested James on Feb. 17 on suspicion of strangulation, fourth degree assault and menacing in what was described as a domestic dispute.

James, Oregon's leading rusher last season, initially entered not guilty pleas to five misdemeanor charges.

James' appearance at the Friday hearing initially was reported on the website of Eugene television station KVAL. Here is the KVAL report.

Lane County chief deputy district attorney Patricia W. Perlow declined further comment.

Three UO players will be at the courthouse on Friday. They might as well take the team bus.
