I've always had I/Os, and am pretty familiar with the fuel consumption. However, I'm wondering what a 20 ft I/O compared to a 20 foot wakeboard boat's fuel comsumption is.

I realize that this is definately apples to oranges, and that's why I'm wodering just how different. I imagine that an inboard is generally less efficient. Then adding the ballasts, and I'm assuming that the fuel consumption could be signficantly more.

So just how bad is it? I'm figuring I'd used about 2x the amount of fuel in a wakeboard boat. Here's my reasoning:

1. I'd get an engine with more hp (more HP usually needs more fuel consumption)
2. No ability to trim the outdrive
3. Lots of extra weight - boat is heavier, ballasts add weight
4. I'd be pulling wakeboarders instead of just skiers and tubers.
5. (nothing to do with efficiency) I'd be pulling more often than an I/O which would do more crusing.

Wakeboarding I would say about 5-7 gallons/hour.

Watch out Rhawn, I'm talking about my CC again! Uh oh forum police!

I've got a Correct Craft 230 with the ZR409 in it. Last year I had a 230 with the ZR390. Both boats would burn a 52 gallon tank of gas in a weekend if we wakeboarded with either extra ballast or a full boat. Now that's riding pretty solid both Saturday morning and afternoon and Sunday morning and afternoon. As has been said before, cruising seemed to burn as much gas a wakeboarding. It's all about the rpm's with these boats.

I don't know how to compare it to the i/o you're talking about. It really depends on the size of the engine.

I had a Bayliner with the 3.0L Mercruiser last year and I now have an older Supra with the 351 engine. We ran about 800 pounds of weight in the Bayliner and we run about the same in our Supra. Weighted and mostly wakeboarding, we would burn 3-4 gallons per hour with the Bayliner and we're burning about 4-5 gallons per hour with the Supra. It isn't a huge difference, but noticeable. On a typical Saturday we ride in the morning for a couple hours and the evening for a couple hours. Cruising is kept to a minimum. We'll usually put 4-6 hours on the boat for the day and burn anywhere from 18-25 gallons of gas. I've been jotting down the hours and gallons of gas all year. When the year is over I'm going to start an Excel sheet to track it and see how it looks. We're also noting the number of people we have with us, but I may leave that factor out.

I used to only burn about 2 gallons per hour in the Bayliner before we started weighting it.

The I/O will be way better on gas the V-drive. hands down. On our vacation my buddy and I would had to fill daily where my other buddy who has a 19 foot campion with a v6 had to fill 3 times over the week. Yes we ran weight and did all the boarding, but he was the kids tubing boat so it got just as much use for sure. Wakeboarding boat=pig on gas. Don't be fooled.

Agreed. These boats are horrible on gas. However, that's why you make your friends throw in if they want to ride.

Agreed, 02lightning.

I'm just not as good at collecting from friends as I am during the week.

The question though - I'll burn through 300 bucks in a weekend. Fun stuff. Well worth it. That's 6-7 hours of ride/drive time per day. Lake gas is around $4.30 now and I've got the little PCM's in both my SANTE's.

inboards are better than most, but many people end adding a lot more ballast to an inboard vs. an I/O and that is why they can consumer more fuel.

4-6gph for a 21-23' inboard and 6-8 for a 22'+

pros are 8-12gph depending on boat...

at lake powell, the IO 350 Mercruiser was burning about as much fuel as my friends new 350hp X15. The X15 was mainly being used for wakeboarding, and we would shut it off every time we were switching boarders. The IO was mainly being used for pulling 2 tubes and wasn't getting shut off quite as much.

I've gone 2 days in a row, 8 hours, and the boat is running most of the time, and have burned about 30 gallons each day. We are wakeboarding 99% of the time we are out there. We might go to a cove or something to jump off some big rocks but i prefer wakeboarding if i'm going out.
