Oh my, cola is bad for you. Go figure. Only 7 liters a day and you have issues, pregnant or not WTF. Who would have thought...
WEDNESDAY, May 27 (HealthDay News) -- Drinking too much cola can increase the risk of a muscle problem called hypokalemia, experts warn.
In people with hypokalemia, a drop in blood potassium levels results in problems with vital muscle functions. Symptoms can range from mild weakness to serious paralysis, say Greek researchers who conducted a review of people who drank between two to nine liters of cola a day.
Two of the patients were pregnant women who were admitted to hospital with low potassium levels. One was a 21-year-old woman who drank up to three liters of cola a day and complained of fatigue, appetite loss and persistent vomiting. An electrocardiogram revealed she had a heart blockage, and blood tests showed she had low potassium levels, the researchers explained in a news release.
The second pregnant patient, who'd consumed up to seven liters of cola a day for 10 months, had low potassium levels and was suffering from increasing muscular weakness, the researchers noted.
Both patients made a rapid and full recovery after they stopped drinking cola and took oral or intravenous potassium. The case studies are described in the June issue of the International Journal of Clinical Practice.
"We are consuming more soft drinks than ever before, and a number of health issues have already been identified including tooth problems, bone demineralization and the development of metabolic syndrome and diabetes," and there's increasing evidence that excessive cola consumption leads to hypokalemia, Dr. Moses Elisaf, of the University of Ioannina, said in the news release.
Elisaf said the three most common ingredients in cola -- glucose, fructose and caffeine -- can contribute to hypokalemia.
"The individual role of each of these ingredients in the pathophysiology of cola-induced hypokalemia has not been determined and may vary in different patients," Elisaf said. "However, in most of the cases we looked at for our review, caffeine intoxication was thought to play the most important role. This has been borne out by case studies that focus on other products that contain high levels of caffeine but no glucose or fructose."
However, "caffeine-free cola products can also cause hypokalemia because the fructose they contain can cause diarrhea," Elisaf said. _________________ jt09 wrote:

I heard a study result on the radio yesterday that "if someone eats an apple before a meal, they will generally eat 15% less of a meal than a person who has eaten nothing at all beforehand"
So some asshat figured out that a starving person is going to eat more than someone who's had a snack before dinner? |

I had a roommate in college that started drinking a 2 liter a day. It was absolutely ridiculous. I don't think I've had 2 liters with of soda in the past 3 months, let a lone in a day.
He gained 50 lbs freshman year, he was definitely doing more than just drinking soda though, but still.
I can't even imagine what 7 liters would be like. |

I drink about 3 coke cans in a day. One in the morning to get going, one for lunch, and maybe one for dinner. That's it. And it's not always coke, sprite, Dew, etc.
7 liters a day!!! HOLY HELL! |

| Rum/diet is my drink of choice...I could kill a 12 pack in a day or two. Wonder if that includes coke zero. I suffer from increasing muscular weakness too when I start to get shitfaced. |

My boss is always carrying around a 30 oz glass of Mtn Dew. At his holiday party he doesn't even have diet soda available. He is not small. _________________

The truth is anything in excess is bad for you. If you ate 50 peaches a day you would have something wrong with you.(Sorry to all the Peach growers out there) _________________ www.wakevideo.com |

Brit Rider, it hasn't been proven yet, but that's what people say. Who knows, maybe in 20 years, Diet Coke will be the new cigarettes. _________________ Liquid Force

I quit drinking coke and all other colas nearly 9 years ago. The acids that are used in pop is extremely toxic. Most of the containers used to transport those chemicals are toxic waste after use.
I will have the occasional root beer (caffeine free) sprite, 7 up or ginger ale. I stick mainly to clear liquids including vodka! _________________ www.integrity-wake.com |

If I'm up at 5-6am... I can have one cracked open by 9 What's wrong with that? Cola is good to clean your insides... it eats away at everything inside. |

Both of these are facepalm statements.
Coke, while acidic, is hardly toxic. The carbonic acid in coke comes from, wait for it... CARBONATION! Not high fructose corn syrup, not from caffine, it comes from pumping CO2 through a solution that is mostly water: H2O + CO2 -> H2CO3 (Carbonic Acid). Root beer is also carbonated, and as a result will have just as much carbonic acid as coke.
Also, Coke is great for taking the corrosion off of battery terminials because of the phosphoric acid, which is found in most organic material. I'm going to go out on a limb here (because I haven't actually tested it), but I would be willing to bet your cran-apple and cran-grape drinks have significantly more phosphoric acid than coke. Furthermore, while they don't contain carbonic acid (because they are not carbonated), they do contain citric acid. On a pH scale, your cran-apple and cran-grape drinks should be lower (more acidic) than coke or pepsi.
I love the internet as much as the next guy, but it's mostly misinformation and hysteria. |
