| Or just say that you're going out of town on business the day that you have to serve. My dad's done this for years and has never gone. They've also never questioned this either. |

You people better pray that you never have to go to trial and end up with a jury of your peers that are uneducated, irrational and hate everything that you stand for.
That's what you call karma. _________________
8824, dude - I suck. You were right.
. |

maybe it's different in other places, but here, you have to call every day, if your number is drawn, you have to schlep down to the courthouse, which has horsecrap parking, sit around and wait for your number, maybe watch a film if you get that far, then get sent home as 3/4 get dismissed at the last minute due to a plea bargain. complete waste of time. in the last year, I have known 10 people that have had to actually go down there and only 2 ever sat on a jury.
oh yea, and they pay you $5/hr for going. don't know about you, but that doesn't cover the bills. |

I just got a notice for jury duty as well. I think I'm going to go ahead and do it though, give me a little break from the hospital. _________________ Liquid Force

Are you a f'ing citizen of this country or not?
If you don't serve when called, you should STFU from here on out about ANYTHING having to do with government, politics, crime, education, etc. etc.
That being said, when I served on a jury it was not that bad and was actually a pretty cool experience. My work paid me during the week it took though. _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

I look forward to serving. First time I got called the case was settled just before we went through selection. I got called for the week we were in Australia so I had to postpone.
Work pays for that time anyway, might as well make an impact. My wife was on a week long jury a while back and it was really interesting. _________________ You have just entered the twilight zone. |

I have no problem serving if called for jury duty now.
However, I don't believe anyone under the age of 25 or over the age of 65 should be on a jury. The 25 and under crowd are typically in school or in job positions that they can't be away for a week or more for a trial without falling way behind their peers. The 65 and over crowd is to out of touch with today's society in my opinion and they've already served the community through previous civic duties and career paths.

boardordie, I know a lot of MDs that are over 65 and much in tune with society.
You forget that the older Boys are marrying girls 1/3 -1/4 their age and having babies.
The only problem with Jury Duty is having to serve on a Grand Jury. That is 6 months out of your life. At least they give you advance notice of the week you must be available. _________________
8824, dude - I suck. You were right.
. |

lol...I have NEVER even responded to jury duty now in quite a few requests over the years. Probably about 8-10 times. I just throw it out when I get it in the mail. _________________ One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them. One ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them. |

I'm pretty sure that here in NY, you would have a bench warrant out for your arrest. Don't get stopped for speeding....
You also might not be able to get any student loans or gov't backed financial help, such as gov't new business loans or the like.
But I'm pretty sure you can be arrested. Not positive though. Here in NY, they don't take that contempt of court stuff lightly. _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

And I have been pulled over MANY times. Never came up. Dont know why. True story. I had to report to court one morning. When the judge was going through the selection process, he asked if anyone in the jury knew either the plaintiff or defendant. I raised my hand. The defendant was being taken to court over a traffic accident. She also happened to be my buddy's mom. When the judge asked if she knew me, she smiled and said, "hi Chris". I was outta there in a heartbeat. |

i'm hoping it's more like a dumptruck w/ bad brakes. | Why? Because I dont frankly have time with 3 kids, a company to run and a whole host of other things to do than to waste my time going so they can just tell me to leave? Maybe you should ask me some follow up questions before you just assume I dont go because I dont feel like it.
They would tell me to leave, because my father was an officer killed in the line of duty and that is considered a conflict of interest in criminal cases.
Good enough for ya? Now you made me cry.

why? because it's your civic duty. it's a waste of your time to be a citizen? i see a bunch of excuses that help you feel better at night for being a shlt citizen.
i love how you act like it's cool to blow off jury duty, laughing about throwing it in the trash 8 times. then when called out, you try and claim how busy you are and conflicted because of how your father died.
people like you, who so cavalierly toss aside your responsibilities as a citizen, absolutely disgust me. you want all the protections this great country offers, but you aren't willing to put forth anything, even a couple of hours of your time to show up and get dismissed. |

I got ya Yea, I joke about throwing it out, so what?
And frankly, I have put my time in with civic duties. I was in the volunteer F.D. for about 9 years, have worked for several political campaigns over the years when I was younger, started the neighborhood watch in my area being the point of contact with the local police department, and most of all, losing a father at 7 to ironically, protect your ass. I think Ive given enough.
Besides all that, I employ 12 people, pay a shitload of taxes, and contribute to society on a daily basis. I am a member of a couple of chamber of commerce who also do a lot of volunteer work. Im not quite sure how much YOU actually contribute so I wont surmise and assume, but Im pretty sure I have given quite a bit more in "civil responsibilities" than you have. _________________ One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them. Yes. Plus, once you are dismissed, you are free from jury duty for a long time, depending on your state/municipality. I don't have to serve again for YEARS.
You are also costing the taxpayers money. Someone has to issue the summons and track all that stuff, and someone will eventually issue your bench warrant. Then some cop will take you in eventually, when he should be investigating a more serious crime or stopping a reckless driver. A judge will have to issue paperwork to fine or imprison you, and if you do a night in jail, taxpayers will pay for that. And even if you are just processed, that costs money too.
Given your record of civic service, is it that big a deal to just go and get it on record that you are inelligible?
it's up to you though, I guess. _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

Make a 1/2 day out of it. I don't know how it works in CT, but if I was inelligible, I would have been in and out before I had time to watch a movie on my ipod.
Maybe you could call a judge and get predismissed or something, like you said. Idk. _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

ironic that your father died protecting me? i think not. i embrace my civic duties, mostly because of my family's strong military background. more ironic that you shirk yours, given your family history.
i think it's funny you think employing people and paying taxes is part of your civic duty.
i am glad cb was able to present the case to you in such a way that it seems to have gotten through to you. |
