PostPosted: Feb 24, 2009 7:44 pm    Post subject: boat damage Reply with quote

Ok so heres the story I got rid of my 07 moomba outback (direct drive) and got my 07 Supra launch 21v a few weeks ago. I took it out last Wed played with the PP ect filled the left ballast and it would only empty halfway which I will have to mess with later.
After struggling to load the boat took about 10 min got it home noticed damage on the left bottom corner about where the fender starts its at the boat shop now or I would have pics its on the side and the corner where the bottom and side meet

In your opinion is it due to improper loading or trailer not far enough in water? or the ballast issue? any advice would be appreciated as im spending 500 to fix it and dont want it to happen again! Crying or Very sad

I have the same boat as you. What do you mean by struggling to load the boat?

After looking at some pictures of my boat on the trailer I wonder if you had the trailer too deep in the water. If you are too deep the rails on the trailer wont' hold the boat and it can move sideways and hit the fender.

Sounds like you didn't have the trailer in deep enough. I always have mind in where the water is just over the fenders. Plus, if you were having trouble with your ballast, you should have put he trailer in extra deep, gotten in the water and slowly cranked the boat up on the trailer with the winch, and then had someone slowly pull the trailer/boat out while you made sure that the hull was lined up on the skegs.

It sucks that the ballast wouldn't dump, but, IMO, that wasn't what caused the damage.

Did the boat hit the fender of the trailer? If so I think you might be too deep.

Did the trailer rails cause the damager then maybe you are too shallow. In that case just back the truck up a bit more as necessary to get it on the trailer. Then when pulling out go slow so the boat stays centered in the trailer.

Do you guys really put your entire fender under water? This summer I was putting 1/2 - 2/3 of the fender under water.

I would say either you hit the fenders or hit something in the water. If you hit the fenders I think you could tell by looking at the fenders.

One tip I have heard for trailering is to submerge the trailer so the entire bunk gets wet letting your boat slide better over it.

If the trailer is in too deep the bunks won't stop the boat from moving sideways and it might be possible for the boat to move sideways enough to hit the fender.

Difficult to judge whether the fenders should be above/under the water. That is something you have to figure out based on the angle of the ramp-there is no universal rule. Steeper ramps=less trailer in the water. Flatter ramps require you to put as much in the water as you can. There are two ramps near my house at the lake I go to that are entirely different-one much steeper than the other-and I have to know that when I'm using one or the other or else the trailering is much more difficult than it needs to be.

Tough to say whether he was too shallow/deep without pics and without seeing the angle of the ramp.

I don't get it there should be nothing that can scratch. Is there some piece of metal exposed on your trailer? Shouldn't be happening for sure. You come in nice and slow? Power it on slow?

m_lesney, we need pictures of the boat, the damage, the damage area, and the trailer. The more pics, the better. Something is terribly wrong here. Either in your loading (no offense) or your trailer.

Is it the trailer that came with the Supra?

My trailer took some dialing in as well since it was a MC trailer. The bow of my Supra was so low, it was going under the front roller pulley and scratching up the bow. I had to make sure my trailer depth was just right to avoid letting the bow go under the roller instead of over it.

Just takes some dialing in. But we need to see what's up first.

Lets assume its not the boat. So it has to be the trailer that is scratching the boat. Did you inspect the trailer when the boat was not on it to make sure all the carpeted bunks were in good shape. I bet that is your problem.

Make sure the carpet is good in all spots. Carpet is not going to scratch your boat like that if it's in good shape.

I've seen bunks do damage if the carpet is not covering the entire area and still has good cushion. Also the fender can do damage if there is not a panel & carpet there also. Whatever you do, get this fixed before you put it back on the trailer. Holy crap, getting my gel fixed every time I pulled the boat would get old quick!

I did bring it in nice and slow never noticed anything it actually loaded very smooth. and yes it is the original boatmate trailer.

So what on your trailor lines up with the damage on your boat?

You could also be running over debris in the water?

Are all the bolts fully seated underneath the bunk carpet?

Yeah, a little tough to see, but it definitely looks like the damage lines up with one of the bunk boards. As others have said, take some zoomed out pics and also pics of the trailer without the boat on, close and zoomed. Either a corner of a bunk board is missing carpet or something is protuding out from them or somewhere near there, it looks like.

watch for a diving boat parked in a cove with four leaf clovers on it, you have a case of scuba diving leprechauns taking knives to the bottom of your hull. We had a similar problem around here and we solved it by taking high powered rifles with us and dangling gold chains in the water. Once you see the little guy start to surface......BOOM!!! problem solved
