Hey, guess where I'm writing from? That's right, the birthing center from Rochester General Hospital. I got up this morning, took one look at my wife in bed next to me, and I was like "uh, I'm not going wakeboarding today, am I?"
And she just said "No, I don't think so."
So, here we are. Hour 6 and things are proceeding slowly but steadily.

When the window of opportunity for an epidural is offered:
TAKE IT, DO NOT HESITATE, DO NOT PASS GO
Because when you finally do want that epidural, you're going to be waiting for awhile.

Transition...
Lock eyes with her and tell her how much you love her. Tell her she can do this.
If she wants drugs... advocate hard for her to get them.
Is she does not want drugs....keep the pushers away from her.
Transition lasts only 15-20 minutes.
Pushing is great relief.
Anyway a baby comes out is a wonderful birth story. |

Thanks for the advice booby, but my wife is not exactly the "lock eyes" type. She wants me doing exactly what I'm doing....leaving her alone right now and getting her water and putting a cold cloth on her head when she says.
If I were to "lock eyes with her and tell her how much I love her and she can do this" she would probably say "Are you f'ing high? Go sit the F back down. No S I can do this....I don't have a choice, do I? A-hole...."

That is funny you say that Dragonlady....my first wife, sons mother, wanted to go natural... When she finally decided that she wanted the epidural, it was too late and natural he was..... Crazy experience, I half passed out, do remember the nurse grabbing me under my shoulders..... |

I can imagine myself saying something like this (no, not pregnant).
My friend on the other hand, just had one naturally, in front of a live studio audience....husband, sisters, doula, nurses, etc. etc. NO THANK YOU. My vadge in trauma is not intended for public spectacle.

I'm sort of afraid of that.....
I'm also kind of upset that she's decided to use Nubain. Baby's heart rate dropped to 117 or so. I'm very nervous and upset about this.....doctor says it's fine, but I'm really not comfortable with this.....

OH man, they are going to put in a epidural in a few minutes. I don't know if I can watch this....
Good news...baby's heart trate is up to 130 now that the nubain is starting to wear off.

Usually you're asked to step out of the room during the procedure.
Yeah... didn't want to make any comment about Nubain.

Dragonlady8, really....I sat 3 feet away in a chair when they did the epidural. Never even said hi to me when they came in the room for that matter.
All I know is she went from very bitchy to high as a kite without a care in the world, and then passes the hell out until it was time to go to delivery. I was able to get some sleep as well....
btw, congrats cameraboy. You are in for one of the COOLEST feelings in the world that first few seconds you lay eyes on your child for the first time. I'd never felt anything like it before....I always wonder if it's the exact same feeling on the second child.
It was the first time I had cried in a really loooooooooooong time. |

K-dub, that's why I said usually. They really don't want any family seeing things done, especially if it's a difficult epidural.
I'm involved with Csections and occasionally they will put an epidural in the OR. No family members are allowed in there until we have the Mom covered.

I have given birth both naturally and with an epi.
The epi was by far the worst part of delivery. |

They did ask me to leave. The epi is in...holy crap, she's a totally different person. She's talking, lively, the baby's heart rate is up in the ideal range, she's cracking jokes and looks good. I'm glad. I didn't want to do the nubain, but it's her body and I wasn't going to get into a battle of wills with her today....
But she's feeling much better on the epidural and things are looking up.
