I had a recent thread on here discussing stretch / non stretch ropes. The sum of which came down to "get a dyneema or spectra line" running with this idea I got the cheapest dyneema or spectra line I could find which was the following:
http://www.fogdog.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2657704
In this description it says "the handle is strung with dyneema" and "polyethylene outer braided jacket" and continues on to describe how long the line is. I thought this meant a dyneema core with a plastic outside. I assumed that a dyneema or spectra core line would mean that when you spread the line, you could see a thicker line in the middle that is the spectra or dyneema. Anyways when i push the line together I don't see any thicker line in the middle. Also on the package that came with the rope it says nothing about dyneema on it.
Arent spectra or dyneema lines supposed to have a separate thicker core in the middle of the plastic weave? Pictures below: _________________ Today is a chance to become a greater person than the person we were the day before. |

It doesn't say the mainline is dyneema in the description, so I wouldn't say you got ripped off. It says the handle is strung with dyneema, but the mainline is Poly-E.
Dyneema and Spectra won't be much thicker than a shoe lace. |

you can simply look at a rope and tell if it is no-stretch or not. IMO, if you had really researched and looked at what you looking into, you would have gotten what you wanted. _________________

Yeah this one was definitely my bad, I got the mainline Chad H mentioned and plan on using the handle from this cheaper rope as it stated it was strung with dyneema. Then I should have a fully dyneema strung line.
BTW I would like to mention that NO ropes are "no stretch" every rope stretches even if only a little. Spectra stretches .05% for instance. This means if you ran a 70 foot spectra mainline, the line will stretch up to 4.2 inches.
I have yet to find a source stating the amount of stretch dyneema has but look occasionally. The dyneema site is fairly extensive and it may be buried there somewhere. In any case.. EVERY line stretches, its just a matter of how much stretch we are willing to accept. _________________ Today is a chance to become a greater person than the person we were the day before. |

how much load is required to stretch that .05%? what braid? what wakeboard ropes use that braid? |

Wakeboarder3780,
I had that exact set up all last season it worked out well for me. I think the handle i was using was actually strung with Poly E, so it was low stretch, but 5 feet of low stretch isn't going to stretch more than an inch or so.
As for your argument about every rope stretching, 4.2 inches, really isn't going to affect us much, and that's if we can manage to put enough load on the line to stretch it that much. |

umm, no, go to class. .05% of 70 feet is .42 inches, roughly half an inch. _________________
