Just found out that one of them is my roomie's brother! Shocked Shocked Shocked

Missing skiers found after two nights in snow caves

Bay Area pair say they learned survival from TV

Two skiers missing from Alpine Meadows Ski Resort for nearly two days survived freezing overnight temperatures by building snow caves.

After a harrowing ordeal, they were reunited with family at the Placer County Sheriff's Department headquarters in Auburn Monday.

Christopher Gerwig, 32, and Patrick Frost, 34, both of San Francisco, were found alive and well around 11:30 a.m. Monday by a Placer County Sheriff's helicopter after nearly 48 hours in the mountains.

Gerwig and Frost suffered minor frostbite, but were otherwise healthy and in good spirits as they addressed the media outside the Placer County Sheriff's Office Monday afternoon.

"We had a positive attitude the whole time," Frost said. "There were no negative thoughts. We kept saying, let's keep going. We are strong and kept going."

The pair of longtime skiers accidentally dropped down the backside of a ski run at Alpine Saturday morning. In whiteout conditions they said they were unable to see any signs or other indications that they were out of bounds.

"We followed a gully and a river hoping to get back to Alpine," Frost said. "By 3 p.m. we figured out what we should do."

They survived on Cliff energy bars and snow they melted in a plastic bag. Gerwig and Frost were wearing proper clothing for the conditions and each had spent a lot of time in the mountains. They said they learned how to make a snow cave by watching the TV show Man vs. Wild.

"It's a good show," Frost said with a smile.

The pair were flown by helicopter to Auburn where they were treated at Sutter Auburn Faith before being reunited with family members, said Lt. Jeff Ausnow of the Placer County Sheriff's Department. They walked and skied off and on throughout the two days covering about 7 miles. They were found near the entrance to Upper Hell Hole Reservoir where they were spotted from the air.

Gerwig said he felt a sense of relief and joy when they spotted the helicopter.

"We were on the edge of a cliff waving our ski poles," he said. "That's when they saw us."

Both said they were a bit embarrassed by the incident and apologized to friends and family for putting them through the ordeal.

Ausnow said the skiers did have cell phones with them, but because of cold overnight temperatures the cell phones were inoperable.

Ausnow said Gerwig and Frost were both thankful rescue crews continued the search.

"They were very appreciative of all the efforts put in to locating them," Ausnow said.

Frost and Gerwig said they hope their survival can serve as a lesson to others.

"We hope our experience helps others out in the future," Frost said.

Alpine Meadows was closed Sunday because a 12-foot-deep avalanche triggered by an avalanche-control crew covered its main entrance road, Carter said. No one was trapped or injured by the avalanche.

The resort will hold a rescue training today, which was scheduled prior to Gerwig and Frost's two-day adventure.

they were saying on the news last night, that one of the two guys (cant' reemember which one) works for the San Jose Sharks....

jt09, get the hook up on some luxury box seats, and we'll have a party!

get them for when the Stars are in town, so you can watch them lose. Laughing

It's cool these guys were found.
We have quite a few of these things happen every year out here, kinda wierd when they hit closer to home.
I have a good friend that made the news lost up there about 5-6 years ago....luckily was found as well.

Damn scary stuff! People who never go have no idea how quickly it can go from blue sky to a whiteout and vertigo in an instant in the mountains.

Always good when it has a happy ending! Also good to know T.V. helps with the "more you know....."

AND it's been an epic year in the West for snow. Remember to always go with a buddy when it piles high! Suffocating in a tree well by yourself is not cool.

Great advice. I am a novice pow skier and it is DEEP in places. To make matters more interesting. I have been skiing on my own.

I did buy a high res yellow lense. Best purchase, makes a huge difference for me.

muckmeister,

I went head first into a tree well once. Scared the hell out of me! Luckily I could move my legs so I was able to wiggle out. Snowboarders can't wiggle so they suffocate.

And in Canada the Ski Patrol doesn't sweep the entire mountain, some of them are too big. Came across one poor snowboarder who had been lying at the bottom of some cliffs for 3 hours with two broken legs. He was damn happy the skiers came along and helped him. Otherwise he would have spent the night in the BC and who knows what could have been by the next morning......

If you can change the lens, I'd see about adding some rose colored lenses to the pouch. For me rose helps huge with low light and low visibility.

That's the second time in 2 weeks that I heard of someone learning how to survive after watching man vs wild. There was a young kid that fell through the ice and was able to get out, he started doing push up, etc to stay warm untill people arrived.

I love that show.

lcap, you got lucky. it's no joke, I packed a few extra things this afternoon.

Dees, The best trick I have seen about falling through ice is to get as much of your body on the top of the ice, even if it is only your shoulders and arms. Your arms will be wet and will freeze onto the ice. Even if you pass out from hypo you are stuck above ice and water. People have been found frozen like that and survived.
