To do a powerslide, cut out hard and abruptly change your edge to your toes, put weight on your front foot and the back end will slide around. Don't bend at your waist, lean at your hips. If you have you hand in the water and your board isn't sliding, it means you are bending over, not leaning on your toes. Also, what kind of board and what size fins. Its much harder to break the board loose with monster fins or a multi-fin board.
