We're heading to Maui in January we will be doing some surfing, snorkling, etc. Has anyone been there and can suggest a few things to see and do.

TIA

WakeTech, hopefully j-ro will chime in his wife has relatives on the island and they have pretty good knowledge of the good spots.

My advice is always the same: don't piss off the locals.

Just a few:

Road to Hana, only if you keep going around the island.

Surfing...surf at the small reefs to the east of Lahaina and stay out of the water at Honoloa on a good day or you might take a board to the head. If it's mediocre and not many out, have at it. Know your limits. If you don't know how to surf, take a lesson. Plenty of good surf schools that aren't your average LA style lameness.

If there is a large swell, hike out to Peahi (Jaws) and witness total insanity. Bring a long lens.

Snorkling molokini is fun. Take a booze cruise. If you don't just snorkle over where they are serving BBQ and beer and join the party. They never know. Wink ALso, take a boat that finds the turtles. That's cool if you've never seen one.

Play some golf, if you enjoy that.

Kick back and enjoy the slower pace.

muck just got back so he'll have a fresh opinion.

This is where I stayed last Oct. I had a blast snuba diving (part snorkeling and scuba). I just found some surfing lessons right on the beach. We also went to a Luau, that was awsome. The food was great and the drinks were unlimitted. Pretty freaking awsome place to be.

If you like skim boarding head over to Big Beach down past Wailia (sp?) The waves get pretty big down there compared to other beaches on the west side of the Island.

Kehei isn't a bad place to stay. All the local I interacted with thought I was a local as well. Just a lot of beach to sit and watch the sunsets.

you are quite a little drive away from where i went but;

i went last year to lahaina stayed at the hyatt regency

our funnest things included:
snorkleing, surfing, sugar cane and coconut plantation (surprisingly fun and intresting!), going to peahi (jaws) rock is awesome, jet skiing, windsurfing and the aquarium is pretty neat.

and of course the louow

no-no's:
sugar cane train ride & dinner (definatly not fun!) although it sounded fun.

*don't know if you like parasailing but yo me it is kind of boring when you are up there after a while, but it's a good chance to see everything!

*road to hana was intresting and all (for the first couple of hours) but it takes a long time to get there (it was like an all day trip for us), and once you are out there, you are out there... so make sure you really want to go if you are going. there are waterfalls into pools, which was probably the highlight of this day.

make sure you see the whales too!

Yeah. Tons. Go to the bookstore and get a guide that has the "off the road" waterfalls. We found one after a hike that we had all to ourselves, literally. Effing incredible.

I think this is the book we used.

Also, go to the black sand beach and bring a waterproof flashlight. There's a little cave deal that you can swim through and climb out the top side, which is kinda fun. The local kids will swim you through for a few bucks if you're not comfortable.

snorkeling - Parus (sp) bay down by Wailaiu (sp)
surfing - Hookipa state park early in the morning.
Food - There is a sushi place in Kihei that is real good but I can't remember the name. Get a Hawaiin Ice in Kihei.

Sorry busy at work right now. I'll think of more.

WakeTech, I just got back a few weeks ago.

Surfing, I was told to hit DT Fleming Beach. Honolua was packed when I was there and I mean packed. Fleming was as well, but Fleming has lifeguards and the locals are not as hostile there. I was given this advice by a local that I became friends with.

Unless you are a SOLID surfer I would pass on Honolua. Hoopika was solid but for some reason nobody was out. They were all in the lot hanging out. No clue why.

I would take a kiteboarding lesson at kite beach.

Snorkel, Molokini (sp) crater is the best from what I heard. Couldn't make it.

Also THE GREAT BEACH is nice as well.

Road to Hana, start early, drive to the end and then make your stops on the way back to avoid the caravan of cars.

Also be cautious once you start to see burned out cars along the high way.

Stop at this place which is very close to Paia. http://www.mauiglassblowing.com/ they gave a real nice tour of Da Factory and Jason was the director. Very kewl guy with some great shiat.
It wasn't a tour, he was stoked I found him and he just showed me the whole place and how they blow glass. Unfortunately, the just fired up the ovens and no molten glass yet.

Also drive up to the volcano, very kewl, try and do it on a clear day or at night which would be amazing. The bike tours are currently stopped operation due to an investigating into the safety of these trips. One group was still doing tours but starting below the national park. It was a voluntary halt and these hacks are still out there. It was all over the news and papers.

Where are you staying? The Hyatt has an observatory on the roof and depending on weather, you can sign up for a cool astronomy presentation. It was cancelled due to weather for us.
