8824, minor stuff. Nothing deep. And no where near any kind of wreck.
Only do it when there is no gear available. I don't go out just to "freedive". If I have no choice okay, but if there is a BC, regulator, and tank. I'm gearing it. |

haugy, I am thinking about taking a dive class, but I really like no clutter.
I am tired of all the gear needed for all these sports. One of the reasons I love surfing. _________________ www.integrity-wake.com |

I have been freediving for 9 years, mostly in Northern CA. I am also scuba cert. but prefer freediving. If you are comfortable in the ocean (swimming, snorkeling) try it out. Read up on the breathing.
In terms of gear: mask/snorkel, fins, weight belt & wetsuit.
Once you get use to freediving then you can start spearfishing (aka "gun under the water")

| 8824, granted the gear is cumbersome, but I've been diving for so long I guess I've gotten used to it. |

Used to do some free diving. Been a long time now, and I would need some training to be able to enjoy it again. _________________ WB.com will never be the same... You will never be forgotten Leggester.

| I spearfish a lot and mix it up with some freediving but scuba mostly. The best part about freediving is being able to silently get to to the fish rather than scaring them away so much more easily when on scuba. When I am going for big grouper though it is all about the scuba since I can't hold my breath long enough usually to get them out of there holes. |

Jenson, I have never gone scuba diving in fresh water. I bet whiskeytown would be cool. I like that lake.
I usually freedive out of Salt point, Elk or Carmel. I also take the kayak out with my gear and dive off of that. It allows you to get to more protected areas on the rough CA coast. And if I get cold I can get back on the kayak and warm up. |
